About the #CANPUBPHOTO initiative

This site is part of an initiative by photographer Nick Turpin to cut through the increasing ambiguity of the phrase ‘Street Photography’.

As a description for candid public photography, ‘Street Photography’ has always been problematic and in recent years the phrase has been used online and in print to include posed street portraiture, composite images, staged scenes and collaborative documentary projects.

The initiative proposes ‘Candid Public Photography’ as a more descriptive phrase and proposes the use of the hashtag #CANPUBPHOTO to accompany the publication online and in social media of Candid Public Photographs.

The use of the hashtag accompanying images will be a declaration by the photographer that the image is a candidly shot photograph from a public place.

For many this definition will not be important but for many others it is crucial to the significance of the image.
